Council Salts away Taxpayers' Money

At last night's meeting of West Berkshire Council's Executive Committee the Council was shown to have salted away £479,000 of taxpayers' money in the bank, instead of using it to bring down the Council Tax rate or to avoid cuts in services.

Important Flood Prevention Work Still Not Finished

Nearly two years after the disastrous July 2007 floods swamped large parts of Thatcham, much of the flood prevention work proposed by the Council's own Overview and Scrutiny Commission has still not been carried out. "This worrying situation came to light at Tuesday's meeting of the O & S Commission," commented David Rendel, one of North Thatcham's District Councillors.

Seventh By-election Win in a Row

Mrs Marvellous Ford last night became the seventh Liberal Democrat by-election winner in a row in the Newbury Constituency. The by-elections have all taken place since the start of 2008. The swing to the Liberal Democrats in these by-elections has varied between 5% and 12%. Last night's swing in Thatcham South and Crookham was 9%.
